Music instruments 'boost brain power' in children

Children who play music instruments from an early age not only benefit from acquiring a new skill but also boost the mental agility of their brain and improve their overall wellbeing, according to a neurobiologist.

Aniruddh Patel, a neurobiologist at the Neurosciences Institute in San Diego, was speaking at an event called Music and the Mind, which was attended by 40 school children, reported SignOnSanDiego.com.

He told the audience about a recent study that was done with a group of seven-year-old children who were learning how to play a music instrument and those who had no involvement.

The report found that those who played a music instrument developed more parts of their brain that deal with processing sounds and controlling complex movements than those who didn't play instruments.

Sundiata Kata, a music programme director from San Diego, who was at the talk, told the newspaper that a number of children she worked with suffered a lot of different traumas in their life and had low self-esteem.

She said: "By introducing music into their lives they’re able to start to feel good about themselves and feel a sense of accomplishment."

Researchers from the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland recently reported that people who play music instruments as part of their therapy can show better signs of recovery than those who receive traditional treatment.
