The musical equivalent of a petting zoo is giving children the opportunity to explore a range of [music instruments](http://www.gear4music.com) they would not usually play with. In much the same way a regular animal petting zoo gives youngsters the rare chance to engage with animals they ordinarily wouldn't come across; the musical counterpart gets children playing with [instruments](http://www.gear4music.com) like the [trumpet](http://www.gear4music.com/Orchestral-Instruments.html), African [drums](http://www.gear4music.com/drum-kits.html) and a xylophone. Held at the Stetson University, the annual free event – now in its fourth year – offers parents a valuable lifeline in engaging their children in music, reported the Orlando Sentinel. This is because the economic downturn has forced many parents to cut music lessons and/or from buying music instruments because it has become unaffordable. Music is increasingly seen as something that is important to a child's early development, which recent research from the UCLA backs up. Sharla Mercado, a private [piano](http://www.gear4music.com/Keyboard-Piano.html) instructor who helped organise the music sessions, told the online news provider: "There are so many studies that show time and time again that music helps the brain." The Florida Music Educators Association found that students who engage in more arts-based and music-based subjects have a higher graduation rate compared to other students.
