Musicians who play [music instruments](http://www.gear4music.com) from early on in their life through to old age will have better hearing than those who don't, according to a new study. The research by a Canadian team based at the Rotman Research Institute in Toronto, which is published in Psychology and Aging, found that a 70 year-old musician's hearing was just as good as that of a 50-year-old who did not play [instruments](http://www.gear4music.com). Working with 74 adult musicians and 89 non-musicians, the team also discovered that musicians, many of whom had been playing since they age of 16, were also better able to pick up speech against a noisy background. Benjamin Zendel, who was part of the research team, said: "We found that being a musician may contribute to better hearing in old age by delaying some of the age-related changes in central auditory processing." "This advantage widened considerably for musicians as they got older when compared to similar-aged non-musicians." It is believed this lifelong association with music helps reduce the age-related decline in hearing – by the time people reach 80, 60 per cent of people naturally suffer moderate hearing loss.
