Musical instruments 'should be available to all'
All children should have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, a Scottish politician has said.
Speaking at the Scottish Labour Party conference, shadow culture secretary Pauline McNeill said that one of her policy aims is to see free tuition provided to schoolchildren whose parents cannot afford to pay for them to have music lessons.
She added that music is highly important to people in Scotland, a fact proved by the statistic that proportionally more tickets for live music events are sold in the nation than anywhere else in the UK.
Ms McNeill said that it was vital more youngsters are given access to musical instruments.
"Music can play a vital role in a young person's development and young people want to take part in music as it helps their confidence and concentration," she stated.
Recent research from the Toy Retailers Association found that electric guitars are high on the Christmas wish-list for many children this year, reported the Scotsman last week.
