Musicians buying fans on Youtube

Some musicians have been paying for fans on social media like Youtube, Twitter and Facebook.

Some musicians have been accused of paying for likes, views and followers on social media platforms to improve their online popularity.

The Newsbeat investigation showed that Youtube views, Twitter followers and Facebook likes can all be bought for as little as £30 for 10,000 Youtube views. Artists can also pay for comments to be put on their pages to validate the views.

An American data monitoring company said that it has a list of artists who they think are buying statistics to raise their profile and popularity with people in the music industry. It is thought the information will be published in a report later this year.

With people like Justin Bieber being discovered through social media, it's no real surprise that budding artists are trying to use the platform to increase their online status.

Twitter told Newsbeat that using a company or computer programme to increase your online activity is against its rules and said that it reserves the right to “immediately terminate your account without further notice” if the user is found to be doing it.

Both Youtube and Facebook also discouraged the activity and Facebook said it did “no good to anyone” and that it could result in your account being disabled.
