Musicians 'could benefit from illegal file sharing'

Billy Bragg has said illegal file sharing could help to raise the profile of many artists.
Great deals on musical instruments

Artists who play instruments such as electric guitars and keyboards could find that illegal file sharing is good for them, a musician has stated.

Billy Bragg, a board member at the Featured Artists Coalition, said people who download songs illegally tend to be those who buy the most legal releases as well.

Therefore, he has encouraged the music industry to perceive illegal file sharing as a promotional opportunity rather than piracy.

Bragg stated that it gives young people in particular the chance to sample content before investing in the proper album.

"We need to allow kids to enjoy music," he commented.

"The industry is trying to bolt the gate long after the particular horse of digitised files has already bolted."

Bragg's comments came after a survey by the Demos thinktank revealed that people who use file sharing websites spend over £30 more on music each year than those who do not.
