Musicians 'find it easier to talk in noisy rooms'

People who play musical instruments are better at distinguishing sounds such as spoken words in a noisy room, according to a new study.
Great deals on musical instruments

Playing musical instruments such as electric guitars and drums may be seen as bad for your hearing, but a new study has found that it could in fact make your senses more acute.

Researchers at Northwestern University in Illinois carried out tests to gauge how well people can distinguish particular sounds in noisy surroundings, New Scientist reports.

People who play an instrument were found to be much more likely to be able to pick out spoken words than those who are not musical.

Nina Krauss, the scientist behind the study, said this could be partly because they are far more well-practiced in this area.

"Musicians spend a lot of time extracting particular sounds from a soundscape," she commented.

Ms Krauss added that teaching children to play a musical instrument would enable them to "function better in our noisy auditory environment".

This comes after research by Aviva found that more than one in ten people who have recently retired are keen to learn a musical instrument.
