Musicians support calls to protect music education

Calls to protect funding for music education in Scottish schools have been backed by two Scottish musicians.

Pleas for all Scottish children to be given the opportunity to learn instruments such as the guitar and keyboards have been supported by two of the country's top musicians.

The Education Institute of Scotland (EIS) this week insisted that funding for music education north of the border should be maintained over the next few years.

Singer-songwriter Eddi Reader agrees, as her children have been among those to benefit from learning an instrument at school in Scotland.

"The joy on their faces confirmed I had made the right move bringing them to a Scottish school," she commented.

Percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie added that music education is very important because it teaches young people everything they need to survive in life.

"Please do not cut this lifeline," she said.

The EIS said music education is important because it helps children learn valuable social skills, as well as how to work both individually and in a group.
