My Chemical Romance have announced that they have split up after a career spanning 12 years.

The New Jersey band posted a statement on their official website, Mychemicalromance.com, on Friday (March 22nd) night confirming that they are to go their separate ways after over a decade in the business.

The band said: "We've gotten to go to places we never knew we would. We've been able to see and experience things we never imagined possible. We shared the stage with people we admire, people we look up to, and best of all, our friends."

At the height of their fame, My Chemical Romance were the poster-boys for the emergence of 'emo' following the release of the hugely successful The Black Parade in 2006. The record catapulted the group into superstardom gaining millions of fans over the world.

Their fourth studio album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys was released in 2010, also gaining rave reviews and landing the band with the headline slot at Reading and Leeds Festivals in the same year.

The band had been releasing tracks from the scrapped LP Conventional Weapons online while guitarist Frank Lero had claimed that writing sessions had been going "really well".
