NME editor criticises X Factor

NME editor Krissi Murison has accused the X Factor of becoming a corporate platform.

Huge stars such as bass guitar legend Paul McCartney may be overshadowing the contestants by appearing on The X Factor, one music industry figure has suggested.

According to Krissi Murison, the new editor of NME magazine, Simon Cowell believes the ITV1 programme can change people's lives.

However, she told the Scotsman that it is actually a corporate platform rather than a leg-up to aspiring artists.

This, she said, is apparent in the fact that stars such as Robbie Williams and Whitney Houston are very keen to go on the show.

Queen's electric guitar player and drummer Brian May and Roger Taylor also appeared on the most recent series, as did singer George Michael.

Ms Murison added that many of the artists now regarded as music legends, such as David Bowie, would never have succeeded if they had come up through The X Factor.

"He'd have been voted off in the first round for being weird," she said.

"It scares me how we're eroding the mystique of the pop star."
