NME list features Pulp, Joy Division and Bowie in top three
Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division was at number one, with Common People, by Jarvis Cocker fronted group Pulp at two and Bowie's track Heroes at three on the list, which covers "100 greatest tracks" from the time of the famed music mag's existence.
During their time together, the band Joy Division were also responsible for songs such as Heart and Soul and New Dawn Fades.
Elsewhere in the mag's top 20, catchy ballad There Is a Light That Never Goes Out, the work of another famed Manchester band, The Smiths, is present at number seven.And The Stone Roses pop up twice – I Am The Resurrection is in 20th position and She Bangs The Drums is in sixth.
Although bands dominate the top 20, the likes of solo stars Madonna and Michael Jackson also pop up.
NME has released the first 20 songs in its list on its website. It says the rest of the list can be viewed in its magazine.
