Nature not nurture 'determines musical taste'
People's appreciation of electric guitar-based rock, pop, hip-hop and other genres could be partly down to their genes, scientists have claimed.
Researchers at King's College London carried out a joint study with Nokia to examine the music preferences of almost 4,000 twins.
The findings showed that the genes can play a significant part in influencing what type of music they enjoy listening to.
Nature's influence was found to be particularly strong among fans of pop, classical music and hip-hop.
However, the trend was less apparent among lovers of country music, as many got into this genre because of their background and upbringing.
Adrian North, professor of psychology at Herriot Watt University, commented: "It appears there is a strong argument for the existence of music genes."
He added that as much as 50 per cent of our musical taste could be predetermined.
This comes after Dr Yuki Kikuchi of the University of Georgetown speculated that people have an innate musical perception from an early age.Posted on 13 Nov 2009 11:10 to category : Music News
