Neil Young: Old music is better

Neil Young has restated his belief that old formats of music are comparably better than today's digital files.
Reckons Steve Jobs preferred vinyl
Neil Young has spoken out again of the way digital music files have led to a reduction in the quality of sound.

The legendary singer-songwriter, who has captivated audiences for the best part of 40 years, even reckons that one of the pioneers of this new format preferred older ways of listening to hit songs.

Rolling Stone reported that Young was taking part in a discussion at the D: Dive Into Media conference when he made the startling statement.

"Steve Jobs [was] a pioneer of digital music, and his legacy is tremendous," he said.

"But when he went home, he listened to vinyl. And you've got to believe that if he'd lived long enough, he would have done what I'm trying to do."

Young's biggest gripe is that the music is lessening the impact of the "art" of music. What consumers want these days is convenience, which means a compromise on quality.

However, the folk and rock music star, surprised audience members when he compared piracy to radio.

"That's how music gets around," he said.
