New Brit award targeted at school musicians
The Brit Class Act will be awarded to a band whose members are still in education and are all under 19 years of age.
It has been announced that the competition will begin in September 2010 when an official schools chart is formed.
The number one act each week, based on song streaming figures, will be put on to the shortlist for the inaugural Brit Class Act, with the winner unveiled in February 2011.
Prime minister Gordon Brown has praised the scheme and said he hoped it would encourage more schoolchildren to pick up musical instruments, which could range from electric guitars to keyboards or violins.
"My ambition is that by 2011 more than two million primary school pupils will be learning a musical instrument and joining in the fun," he stated.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that acoustic guitar player Paolo Nutini is up for two Brit awards, while Florence and the Machine and Lady Gaga are both in the running in three categories.Posted on 22 Jan 2010 16:44 to category : Instruments News
