New EU laws could allow musical instruments on planes
Many musicians have serious concerns about how their precious equipment will be handled by airline staff and often are unaware of each company's policy until they get to the airport.
The plans are part of a wide-ranging assessment of the rights of air passengers and suggests that musicians are unaware of how "fragile and often very expensive" instruments will be placed on board their flight.
The measures come after lobbying from the Musicians' Union and the International Federation of Musicians, which received more than 40,000 signatures for their petition to increase legislation when it comes to carrying instruments on board a plane.
A statement from the EU read: "Under the proposal, the air carriers must accept smaller instruments into the passenger cabin and must clearly indicate the terms and conditions for the transport of larger instruments in the cargo hold."
The document went on to note that national authorities will be responsible for the enforcement of compensation rules for mishandled baggage.
