New books celebrates the piano
The substantial book, entitled A Natural History of the Piano, has been produced by the award-winning pianist Stuart Isacoff.
It takes readers from the very beginning of the instruments conception in Italy, with Bartolomeo Cristofori credited as the inventor of the piano, throughout to modern-day jazz pioneers who delivered something novel.
Mr Isacoff credits the piano with the "awakening of modern concert life", with Mozart one of the few virtuoso musicians elevating the instrument to top of the pecking order of classical devices.
The book is full of fascinating characters, interesting anecdotes and plenty of juicy stories, with Mr Isacoff declaring the piano "the most important music instrument ever created".
He cites a famous quote Sviatoslav Richter, a Soviet-era pianist, who discussed the difficulty of choosing the correct type of instrument when on tour.
“Nothing is worse for a pianist than to choose the instrument on which he's going to have to perform," he said.
"You should play on whichever piano happens to be in the hall, as though fate intended it so. Everything then becomes much easier from a psychological point."
