New campaign wants more live music instruments on Broadway

A new campaign has been launched to see the return of more live music in Broadway shows.
Great deals on musical instruments

A new campaign has been launched to stop producers from using pre-recorded music instead of live musicians playing with music instruments on Broadway.

A very powerful banding of composers, musicians and representatives from the New York Philharmonic, the Juilliard School and the Metropolitan Opera have come together stop this "great American tradition" of live music from disappearing from musical theatres.

Their campaign, entitled Save Live Music on Broadway, is aimed at highlighting their grievance at producers whom the group says are reducing the number of people in live orchestras accompanying musicals and instead replacing them with recordings to maximise profit, reported Reuters.

The campaign representatives referred to examples of recent showings of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and West Side Story which had cut live music. The latter saw five musicians eventually replaced with a synthesizer.

Stephen Sondheim, a composer, said on one of the promotional videos on the campaign website: "Every audience is privileged to see a very specific performance that nobody will ever see again. It's the aliveness of the orchestra that makes the evening unique and allows for the interplay between the audience, the stage and the pit, which is necessary in every musical."

Some of the supporters of the campaign include Scott Frankel, Michael Korie, Marc Shaiman and Joseph Polisi.

West Side Story is a modern day adaptation of Shakespeare's enduring Romeo & Juliet, and sees the star-crossed lovers battle to be together against a 50s Manhattan backdrop.
