New scheme to keep school children playing with music instruments
A new scheme is to be launched to encourage secondary school children to continue playing with music instruments.
The We are the Passengers project aims to ensure that school children who take up a music instrument at primary school continue to pursue music into secondary school, reported Nottingham Council.
National research has revealed that this is a trend occurring up and down the country, and in Nottingham, the council found that last year two-thirds of primary school children gave up their music instruments when making the transition to senior school.
Councillor David Mellen, portfolio holder for children's services, said: "We are very proud that colleagues and students from Nottingham are leading the way to help try and solve a national problem of keeping children interested in music when they move up to secondary school."
Devised by Nottingham City Music Service and the national music organisation Music Futures, a new website has been launched. Packed full of resources and information for schools, teachers, parents and school children, it aims to be a hub of activity to encourage school children to keep playing.
Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, recently launched a new charity in the capital aimed supporting, empowering and opening up opportunities for talented young musicians.
