Nicole Amati violin to go under the hammer
The violin was made by Nicole Amati in 1682 and has stood the test of time, remaining in immaculate condition.
It was crafted by Amati using a technique that is known as the 'grand pattern' using regular grain of the alpine spruce and finished with a golden varnish.
The year it was made is also significant as it was towards the end of his life – it is believed that his son Girolamo helped him make the musical instrument.
Sotheby's has estimated that the violin will sell for around £250,000 to £350,000.
Amati's style of violin making is seen as being very distinct. The instruments tend to be a little bit wider than other violins and come with an 'Amati 'style' soundhole, which creates an inimitable sound.
Other highlights of the sale in March include a Marino Capicchioni violin (£20,000 to £30,000), a Circle of Hendrik Jacobs violin (£8,000 to £12,000) and a silver-mounted violin bow (£1,500 to £2,000), which is stamped with "A Lamy a Paris".
