A music fan has pleaded guilty to assaulting Oasis's electric guitar player Noel Gallagher at a gig in Toronto last year.

Daniel Sullivan, 48, managed to get on stage at the Virgin Music Festival in September 2008 and proceeded to barge over the guitarist and lunge at singer Liam Gallagher before being dragged away by security guards.

The assailant finally appeared in court in Toronto last week, where he admitted the attack, which left Noel with three broken ribs.

Mr Sullivan, who claims to have been so drunk at the time of the incident that he has no memory of it, will return to court to be sentenced in February.

Noel's injury forced Oasis to cancel five dates and perhaps set the tone for the rest of the ill-fated Dig Out Your Soul tour.

Dig Out Your Soul received the best critical reception of any Oasis album since 1995's (What's The Story) Morning Glory? and tickets for the world tour sold in record numbers.

However, just when things appeared to be looking up for the Manchester guitar band, they split with four dates of the tour remaining after Noel walked out following a confrontation with his brother which is believed to have culminated in them smashing each other's favourite electric guitars.
