North-east accents used as music instruments
A variety of north-east dialects are being used as musical instruments as part of a new composition based on everyday speaking voices.
"The experience begins with the sound of the wind, formed from tens of thousands of human voices, and gradually unfolds the stories of fishermen, farmers and city-dwellers in the north-east of England," he told the BBC.
"This is all accompanied by imaginary musical instruments derived directly from the speaking voices we hear all around us."
Mr Wishart, who is Arts Council Composer Fellow in the Department of Music at Durham University, added that the piece culminates in speech transforming into song.
Trevor Wishart's compositions include The Division of Labour, Memories of Madrid and Globalia.
The piece will be premiered at the Sage Gateshead on May 4th.
