Novation Artist Jimmy Mac Explains Lorde's Set Up

Jimmy Mac talked to Novation about using the Impulse 61 on stage and working with Grammy Award-winning artist Lorde.

With a number one single to her name in three countries at the age of 16 and a critically-acclaimed debut album, it seems that Lorde is unstoppable. Jimmy Mac joined her live after hearing her EP.

Originally with a background in drumming, Jimmy is her keys player, using the Novation Impulse 61 and Ableton Live. The percussive techniques he uses work well with Impulse's drum pads, which are used to trigger Lorde's vocal samples. The keys are assigned to drum racks with samples from Lorde's studio recordings."

He finds it easy to work with Lorde's drummer, Ben Barter, saying, "it feels real tight, having two drummers - you're locking really good together".

"Everything out of is is everything that's not drums. I've got all the sounds automated for different parts of the song to turn on and off - the effects and program changes are automated as well."

With stages often being dark, the Impulse 61 is easily visible. "The reason why I like the Impulse is that the pads are really big," says Jimmy. "...and there's lights around them! It's so easy to use, everything's assigned to everything. So simple."

Watch Jimmy Mac put the Impulse to the test, performing with Lorde on her number one single Royals.
