Organ's future uncertain

The future of a 150-year-old organ is uncertain.
Great deals on musical instruments
The future of a 150-year-old organ remains uncertain after negotiations to sell it collapsed.

Currently housed at Parr Hall, it was hoped the organ would be snapped up Sheffield Cathedral, but, according to the Very Rev Peter Bradley, the continuing malaise in the economic climate has left them short of funds, reported the Warrington Guardian.

Warrington Borough Council, which was negotiating on behalf of Parr Hall, is now exploring other options.

Barry Johnson, vice-president of Warrington Male Voice Choir told the newspaper: "We want to be involved with any consultation because we weren't satisfied with the process before. There has been apathy towards the organ for decades because the council doesn't want to spend money.

"It is a unique, magnificent instrument, a compliment to any concert. The organ is something very special, irreplaceable and it needs to stay in Warrington."

Other churches located nearby are being considered as suitable places to host the organ, which first came to Parr Hall in 1926.

In other organ-related news, Francesca Massey has become the first female organist at Durham Cathedral.

"It is a fantastic city and a stunning cathedral and it is a real honour to be working here," she told the Northern Echo.
