A piano that is also art
A piano that was made by the renowned sculptor Michael Parekowhai has been snapped up by the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa for a cool $1.5 million (approximately £981,000).

Lavishly entitled He Korero Purakau mo te Awanui o te Motu: story of a New Zealand river, the ornately carved Steinway piano is the result of ten years of hard graft from Parekowhai.

Known for his love affair with producing fantastic custom-made musical instruments, his latest effort is already being touted as one of his all-time greatest works.

"This piece will form the centrepiece of Te Papa's art exhibition programme next year. We're excited about sharing this spectacular work with New Zealanders, starting with its display in the Christchurch Art Gallery, before we show it at Te Papa," said Michael Houlihan, chief executive of Te Papa.

"And we're also looking forward to hearing the beautiful music talented pianists will be playing on it."

The piano is currently on display at the muse du quai Branly in Paris until February 2012.

Art-inspired pianos have been located around Miami to tie in with the city's annual Art Basel Beach Art Show.
