Part time maniac Keith Richards
Keith Richards "can be" a "maniac", but does as he is told at home.
The Rolling Stones guitarist said reports of his wild lifestyle - which has seen him arrested on drugs charges numerous times in the 60s and 70s, and he is even rumoured to have snorted his dead father's ashes, - are overblown, and although he has a crazy streak, most of the time he remains fairly straight.
He said: "People always like to make you all very cut and dried and simple - 'Oh, he's a maniac.'
"And I can be, when I have the time for it, but I'm also growing up. I pace myself. Even I couldn't be that kind of Keith Richards all the time.
"When I'm at home I do as I'm told. 'Yes darling, no darling', like any other guy.
"But I know there's a streak in me that, given the opportunity, will show you what Keith can do."
Keith - who is an avid reader and collector of books in his private life - added that he doesn't feel any need to qualify any rock 'n' roll myths about him, and never plays up to the character of himself portrayed by the media.
He said: "I've never felt driven to live up to this image they've made of me. That's a mug's game, a sucker shot. But I don't mind using it occasionally."
It was recently reported Keith had given up alcohol, after seeing the damage it has done to his bandmate Ronnie Wood, although he later said: "The rumors of my sobriety are greatly exaggerated.
"And we'll leave it at that."Posted on 28 Apr 2010 10:00 to category : Music News
