Paul McCartney has made the bold claim that The Rolling Stones envied the collective singing talents of the Fab Four.

McCartney was speaking about the intense rivalry between the legendary bands, which formed within two years of each other in the 60s, revealing that the electric guitar player Keith Richards had only quite recently revealed this fact.

McCartney told the Radio Times: "I talked to Keith Richards a couple of years ago, and his take on it was: 'Man, you were lucky, you guys, you had four lead singers,' whereas The Rolling Stones only had one."

The singer-songwriter and guitar player also said that Mick Jagger would refer to them as the "four-headed monster" because they all dressed the same, at least in the early days.

Coincidentally, he said it was "lucky" that The Beatles came together at all as they missed having to do compulsory national service by two years, while his former band mate, Ringo Starr, recently said that the band were "lucky" to have had him as a drummer.

McCartney is one of the many artists featuring on an upcoming Buddy Holly tribute album.
