Beatles legend Paul McCartney has been lined up to perform at the Royal Wedding in April.

According to the Daily Star, the bass guitar player has been booked to play at the Buckingham Palace reception for Prince William and Kate Middleton following the marriage ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

An inside source said: "William and Kate have chosen their wedding list and Paul McCartney is their number one choice to perform.

"They can't think of anyone more perfect to kick off proceedings."

It is believed that McCartney has been asked to do a few songs at the event, although a spokesman for the Palace refused to confirm his attendance and said the plans for the reception have yet to be finalised.

The marriage ceremony is due to take place on April 29th and will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams.

In 1999, McCartney was named as the greatest composer of the millennium following a BBC poll.

He beat the likes of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven to the accolade, while his fellow Beatles band member and writing partner John Lennon was named in fifth position.
