Percussion prejudice up for discussion

An article in the Telegraph has brought up the subject of possible percussion 'prejudices' as part of an interview with Colin Currie, a percussion player.

While the article heralds a sort of percussion renaissance, it suggests the likes of drums are sometimes among the less celebrated parts of the orchestra.

Currie says in his interview that "colour is a vital part of music, and we have this huge, wonderful palette of colours, which no other family of instruments can beat".

The article makes it clear that this is far from the sole advantage of percussion in Currie's eyes, however.

He also says that he has a special set of cymbals that he makes sure go with him when he travels for work because of their particular aural quality.

However, the musician - who also says he traces his love of the likes of drums to the age of three, when he was presented with a set as a gift - admits at one point to having been quizzed over his ability to decode sheet music at all!

Gear4Music's percussion collection features the likes of xylophones, cajons and bongos, to name but a few.
