Phil Spector told he can't appeal against murder conviction

Phil Spector, the hit record producer, has been told he can't appeal his 2009 murder conviction.

Phil Spector has been told by a court in LA that he is unable to appeal against his 2009 murder conviction.

The former hit record producer was found guilty of shooting the actress Lana Clarkson at his California home in 2003.

Lawyers acting for Spector, 71, argue that he was not given a fair trial, specifically because the LA Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler prejudiced the court.

They said that, in effect, the judge had turned himself into a witness by allowing prosecutors to use a video of him while he explained details of forensic evidence to jurors.

The court rejected this claim.

This latest effort from Spector follows on from efforts earlier this year to get a retrial, with his lawyers arguing that the jury should not have heard the testimony of five women about gun-related incidents involving the producer.

In May, a panel of judges rejected this.

They added: "The evidence showed that, when fuelled by alcohol and faced with a lack or loss of control over a woman who was alone with him and in whom he had a romantic or sexual interest, Spector underwent a sharp mood swing."

A new TV film about Spector is currently being filmed, starring Al Pacino.
