Piano player maestro Lang Lang has been awarded an honorary doctorate in music by the Prince of Wales at a ceremony in London last week.

The Chinese classical musician, 28, was recognised for his contribution to the piano form at the Royal College of Music, reported the Associated Press.

It was all the more special given that Prince Charles is known for his love of music, and who was himself heavily involved in the selection of songs at the royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton on the 29th April 2011.

Lang Lang is thought to be both the youngest and only Chinese individual to have received the accolade, which highlights the respect and recognition he has gathered in his professional career as a classical pianist.

Other musicians to also be honoured at the awards, which saw Prince Charles treated to an unusual piano recital by Antoine Francoise who plucked at the piano strings, were the composer James MacMillan and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Described by the New York Times as "the hottest artist on the classical music planet", Lang Lang, who began to play the piano at the age of three, was appointed International Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in 2004.
