Play instrument before learning theory, says teacher

Budding electric guitar players should learn music theory after being acquainted with the instrument.

This is the view of music teacher Doug German, who teaches children in Berkshire how to play instruments such as the drum kit, guitars and keyboards.

Speaking to the Reading Post, he said many young people could be put off music if they are confronted by "difficult theory" at the very beginning.

Therefore, he encourages his students to jam on the instrument of their choice and learn the basics before teaching them the theoretical aspects of music.

"Obviously you can't avoid it, but by this time the kids can already play the instrument so they don't get bored," Mr German commented.

He said this is the best way to learn how to play a musical instrument, adding that The Beatles for example could not read a note of music.

This echoes the views of guitar tutor Tom Hess, who said that if students are confronted with musical theory early on, they could find it boring and quickly lose interest.
