Playing guitar while watching TV 'can improve technique'

Guitar players can achieve more on the instrument if they occasionally practice while watching television.

Musicians who play their guitars while watching television will soon find they improve their proficiency on the instrument.

This is according to advice from Sonic State contributor Rich Beech, who said strumming along acoustically while paying attention to what is on screen will lead to improvements in muscle memory and make playing more natural.

He stated that he had tried the technique himself when he was learning to play the guitar, managing to go through seven modal scales while concentrating on the TV.

"I'd managed to prove to myself that I did know my scales really well," Mr Beech explained. "I subconsciously knew what I was doing all along and because this process spawned from beneath my conscious level of thought, I'd ingrained the scale shapes deep within my head."

Last month, Gibson Lifestyle blog contributor Ellen Barnes said playing the guitar to a loved one can be a romantic act.

She said that one good idea for a special occasion is to play the special person in your life a love song.

Ms Barnes suggested covers of tracks such as Bob Dylan's Lay Lady Lay and Eric Clapton's Wonderful Tonight could be great for this purpose.
