Playing an electric guitar, drum kit or keyboard could be good for your mental health, experts have stated.

According to US-based group the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM), making music can help to relieve stress.

The body also stated that playing a musical instrument can be a good way of tackling depression, particularly during the Christmas season.

"With the holiday season as one of the most vulnerable times of the year, music making can make all the difference in keeping spirits uplifted," NAMM commented.

The organisation said playing an instrument can enrich the festive period and create lasting family traditions.

This, it stated, could foster a sense of togetherness among the family, particularly if everybody joins in.

NAMM added that many people regret not learning to play a musical instrument, but insisted that a person is never too old to start.

According to figures from Halifax, 9.7 million people in the UK actively play instruments such as guitars and keyboards.
