'Plenty of options' when replacing pickups

Musicians should consider what sound they want from their guitar when altering their pickups.

Guitarists who have decided the time has come to alter their pickup have plenty of options available to them.

This is the advice of Gibson Lifestyle blog contributor Ted Drozdowski, who explained that while certain pickups will come as standard when you buy a specific guitar model, configurations can actually be more fluid.

"Unless one's a purist who always insists on stock gear, pickups can be switched out, single-coils and humbuckers can be paired together, additional pickups can be installed via routing, wiring and soldering," he explained.

Drozdowski - who is a member of the band Scissormen - added that the wide variety of pickups on the market all have the potential to have a large effect on the sound of your guitar.

He went on to recommend replacing a pair of humbuckers with Gibson P-90s if you are looking for a 1960s vibe.

The expert added that a good rule of thumb for accentuating or downplaying biting tones is to replace the bridge pickup with something more suitable.

Drozdowski has previously won a Keeping the Blues Alive award from the Blues Foundation, as well as acting as a consultant for Martin Scorcese Presents: The Blues.
