Positive lyrics 'can hit the right note'

Songwriters who include positive lyrics in their compositions could encourage good behaviour in listeners, according to new research.
Great deals on musical instruments

Guitar players and pianists may want to ensure they include positive lyrics in their latest compositions after a new study found they could be good for listeners.

An academic at the University of Sussex carried out tests to gauge whether song lyrics can affect listeners in a positive way by exposing them to tracks such as Michael Jackson's Heal The World and The Beatles' 1965 number one Help!

Dr Tobias Greitemeyer, the researcher behind the study, picked these songs as they were deemed to have a positive message and pro-social lyrics.

While some test subjects were made to listen to these tracks, others were required to listen to songs with neutral or nonsensical words.

Dr Greitemeyer then exposed each group of listeners to various scenarios to test their reactions, such as deliberately knocking a cup of pencils from a table.

Those who had listened to songs with a positive message were the quickest to react, as they rushed to pick the pencils up.

Dr Greitemeyer said this proved that pro-social songs had helped to make people more empathetic and considerate.
