A musician from Prague has been speaking about how playing a tradition Japanese bamboo [flute]( known as shakuhachi has changed his life and given it more spiritual meaning. Vlastislav Matoušek, who is one of many musicians from Prague that built their own guitars under strict communist rule, has gone from a relatively traditional background in music to a more creative one, reported the Prague Post. He is now one of the world's leading shakuhachi flute players. Discussing what made this instrument particularly attractive to him as a musician, he told the newspaper: "It was this connection to spiritual life, especially Buddhism." He went on to explain how he first came across the instrument: "This man came on stage in a kimono with this big piece of bamboo, and stood for half an hour and played these long tones. Nothing changed. It was some kind of mystical ritual. It was something which I had never heard before, and it very deeply moved me." In 1987, 16 bone flutes from around 6,000 BC were excavated from a Neolithic tomb in Japan. They are thought to be the oldest known [instruments]( in the country.
