Professor Green says musicians may sign with companies over labels

UK rapper Professor Green has hinted in the future more artists will sign to companies rather than record labels.
Great deals on musical instruments

Top UK rapper Professor Green has said that the future of the music industry could see artists signing with companies rather than record labels.

Since the digital revolution, the music industry has undergone such a transformation that any new idea is an idea worth testing, especially for up and coming artists.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1, Professor Green said that record labels were fundamentally out of touch, and that brands could offer musicians a better alternative.

He said: "The way the industry is going [brands] are the only way you can finance a project. I don't think it's selling out. The relationships you can build with brands are important. It opens up a lot to me as an artist promotionally but it also gives them a lot."

His next album will be marketed by Puma and he has also signed up as the firm's social ambassador.

Record labels are taking notice of this new landscape, reported the BBC. Mike Pickering, an executive at Sony Music, recently said that they were not a record company but an entertainment company.

What Pickering has found is that more money can be made by attaching a song to a product or a brand than from actual sales. Some would call it a sell out, but with digital piracy still posing a huge challenge to money made from singles, other revenue streams need to be considered.
