Josh Homme almost split Queens Of The Stone Age when bassist Nick Oliveri left.

The US rock band reunited to play the UK's Reading and Leeds festivals last weekend after a two year break, but Josh revealed the group nearly ended altogether in 2004 when they parted ways with Nick, who had played on two of the band's albums, 'Rated R' and 'Songs For The Deaf'.

Josh explained to presenter Zane Lowe: "I thought about giving up a lot. I wanted to respect what was there. Eventually, however, you come to a spot where you say, 'Should some mistake really be the end of us all?'

"Someone else's mistake. Is that fair?' In the split with Nick I found my reason to continue, to make it about the music."

'Sick Sick Sick' rocker Josh also revealed the split - which happened when he and Nick fell out - was over the different ways the two perceived the function and purpose of the band.

He continued: "It always made me nervous that it would get to the spot where the personalities would overcome the music because I don't need a better table at a restaurant, I just want people to respect our music.

"I'm playing for respect and I think Nick got a little confused about what the real expectation was. It wasn't about partying. I would never ask someone to stop partying, you do whatever you want as long as you do a good job at your job because you have deserve the party."

Since the departure of Nick, Queens of the Stone Age have worked with a revolving cast of guitarists, bassists and drummers. The group is presently preparing to record their sixth album.
