R&B veteran R Kelly is in hospital after undergoing emergency throat surgery in Chicago.

In a telling tweet last week, the singer-songwriter mega-producer revealed that he was having some trouble with his throat. He said: "I refuse to take another cup of theraflu! I feel like my throat is coming back. I've been in bed sweating like crazy."

It was later revealed by his publicist that after complaining about throat pain, Kelly was taken to hospital where doctors found an abscess on one of his tonsils.

Surgeons have since drained the abscess and Kelly is now recovering, or as his publicist Allan Mayer put it, the musician is "laid up indefinitely" in the meantime.

It is unknown what impact this will have on the star's voice, but he tweeted earlier today (July 21st) saying: "I'd like to thank everybody for their love, concern and support. I will be back!"

R Kelly is most famous for the tear jerking smash hits I Believe I Can Fly and If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time, the smooth Bump N' Grind and Your Body's Callin', and club-bangers like Home Alone and Fiesta.
