Radio 1's Big Weekend 2012 to be held in east London
Radio 1 will be holding its annual Big Weekend free music festival in 2012 in Hackney as part of the London 2012 Olympics festival.
The event will be held at Hackney Marshes in east London in June to a capacity crowd of 100,000 people, which is almost double some of the previous Big Weekend festivals, reported Radio 1.
Called BBC Radio 1's Hackney Weekend, it will be made up of six stages to host an array of stars and their music instruments, and be the corporation's biggest ever free ticketed live music festival.
Andy Parfitt, controller of Radio 1, called it the most "ambitious event" in the station's 44-year history.
He told the station: "We aim to enhance the overall London 2012 summer with a celebratory event aimed specifically at the thousands of young people who live in the boroughs directly surrounding the Olympic Park."
Plan B and Leona Lewis – who grew up in Hackney – are two the stars confirmed to perform at the two-day musical extravaganza.
Festival 2012 is seen as a way for everyone to celebrate the Olympics through the arts. It will open on 21 June 2012 and run until 9 September 2012, leaving a "lasting legacy on the arts in the UK".
