Rage Against The Machine score Christmas number one
Electric guitar band Rage Against The Machine (RATM) have come out on top in the most eagerly anticipated festive chart battle in years.
Jon and Tracy Morter set up a Facebook campaign to encourage music fans to download Killing in the Name instead of the debut single by X Factor winner Joe McElderry.
Zack de la Rocha, frontman with RATM, told BBC Radio 1 he is ecstatic about securing the Christmas number one.
"It says more about the spontaneous action taken by young people throughout the UK to topple this very sterile pop monopoly," he commented.
McElderry, who becomes the first X Factor winner not to achieve a Christmas number one, congratulated his chart rivals on their accomplishment. He said being part of a "much-hyped" battle for the top spot had been very exciting.
Simon Cowell, the music mogul behind The X Factor, recently dismissed the Facebook campaign as "stupid" and "cynical". RATM have already pledged to donate the proceeds from the single to charity group Shelter.Posted on 21 Dec 2009 18:00 to category : Music News
