Rare French horn from Nazi Germany uncovered
A rare French horn from the era of Nazi Germany has been found in the most unusual of places – in a loft in Norwich.
The music instrument comes specifically from Adolf Hitler's bodyguard regiment, which was a music unit that played at many of the flamboyant ceremonial events held under the Third Reich.
It will now be sold at an auction later this month, reported the online newspaper EDP24.
The instrument, which looked well used, was said to still be in good working order and in a condition good enough for an engraving of the name of the music unit to be easily read.
Formed in 1933, the first year Hitler came to power, the Musikkorps der Leibstandarte SS was one of Nazi Germany's most famous military bands and even toured Europe in the pre-war years.
Andrew Bullock, an antiques auctioneer, told the online newspaper: "We regularly offer weapons, buttons and badges brought back to Britain in kitbags following the collapse of the Third Reich – but I can’t find any records of a sale of a German military musical instrument, either by ourselves or any other auction house.”
The value of the horn is currently estimated at a guide price of £500 to £600.
The military band was known for its distinct black uniform and was under the musical leadership of Herman Muller-John.
