Rare Gibson Les Paul fetches $194,500 at auction
The 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard Sunburst (Serial No. 90136) was up for grabs as part of a Heritage Vintage Guitars & Musical Instruments Signature Auction earlier in the month.
Auctioneers noted that despite the guitar make itself not being suitably rare its value had shot up due to the fact that it is only one of two left-handed '59 bursts. It had been given a pre-sale value of $125,000 but subsequently smashed through this barrier.
The guitar in question once belonged to iconic tennis player John McEnroe and featured on the front cover of a 2009 issue of Guitar Aficionado, making it one of the most sought-after axes in the Los Angeles auction.
Mike Gutierrez, consignment director at Heritage Auctions, told artdaily.org: "The 1959 left-handed 'burst is about as rare and famous as any guitar in the world."
The Gibson Les Paul sunburst is one of the most iconic axes in history with Jimmy Page, Fleetwood Mac's Paul Green and Eric Clapton regularly playing the instrument during their career.
