Rare violin becomes first 'Australian-owned' music instrument
A rare Stradivarius violin becomes the first "Australian-owned" music instrument, courtesy of a specially created commercial fund.
The violin was bought for $1.79 million (£1.1 million) by the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) Instrument Fund, reported the Canberra Times.
It was the fund's first purchase, and was made possible by a generous donation – the largest in the orchestra's history - from Peter Weiss, a philanthropist.
Speaking to the newspaper, lead violin player Satu Vanska said that the Stradivarius, one of 650 in the world, was the "epitome of fine violins" with a sound that carries through "the ears and straight to the listener's heart".
She said: "After endless, lifelong practice to master the violin, most of my generation of violinists simply can't afford to own an instrument like this one. Being allowed to play this Stradivarius is the realisation of a dream I didn't dare have."
The ACO Fund works by allowing investors to purchase instruments. These are subsequently "lent" to the ACO musicians.
An even rarer Stradivarius violin is to be sold off at an auction on June 20th 2011, with all its proceeds going to the Northeastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund. The 1721 Lady Blunt Violin sold for $10 million (£6.1 million) at its last auction.
