Recovered Bulgaria violin may belong to Stradivarius
Forces in the eastern European country discovered the instrument and now their counterparts in the UK are in the process of determining if it is the same violin which was stolen from a central London station in 2010.
The Stradivarius, made in 1696, has an estimated value of £1.2 million and was stolen from classical musician Min-Jin Kym from a cafe in Euston station in November 2010.
John Maughan admitted to the theft in 2011 and was jailed for four years but the instrument was never recovered.
A spokesman for the BTP said: "British Transport Police detectives are aware of the recovery of a violin in Bulgaria and will investigate with insurers, underwriters and international colleagues, whether it is the 1696 Antonio Stradivarius antique violin stolen from a cafe at Euston rail station in November 2010."
Stradivarius violins are some of the most valuable instruments on the market with those from the "golden era" (post-1700) sometimes fetching over $6 million (£3.9 million), according to Kerry Keane at Christie's.
