Red Hot Chili Peppers' new studio album is a work of art
The Red Hot Chili Peppers are embracing more than just their music instruments in the run-up to the launch of their new album by enlisting the services of British artist Damien Hirst.
The band were positively enthusiastic about the CD cover artwork, which features a bluebottle on top of some medicine.
Anthony Kiedis, the band's lead singer, told Classic Rock magazine: "It's an image. It's art. Iconic. We didn't give it its meaning but it's clearly open to interpretation."
Hirst is one of the most famous, popular and successful British artists of all time, having emerged in the 1990s with his contemporary artwork.
He is Britain's richest living artist with a reported wealth of around £215 million.
I'm With You, which is due out at the end of August, is the Red Hot Chili Peppers' tenth studio album.
The bass guitar player Flea recently told Stereogum that it marked another "rebirth" in the band's music direction, this time brought on by the departure of John Frusciante.
He said: "The number one difference is John Frusciante left the band, and he was a huge part of our creative process for a long time. I'm so grateful for him."
