Renowned luthier remembered
Rene Alfred Morel, who died at the age of 79, was once described as "arguably the best violin restorer in the world".
The Star-Ledger recounted one incident where his expert skills quite literally saved the day.
Barbara Mallow, a cello player, was performing at a concert when she accidently tripped and damaged her 17th century musical instrument.
One quick call to Mr Morel at 10pm in the evening and, such was his character; he was quick to ease her concerns.
"He said, 'Oh don't you worry, Barbara. I'll fix your cello … and you tell Don to take you dancing.' It was just what I needed to hear at that moment," Mallow told the news provider.
Mr Morel, who was born in France, began his career as an instrument maker from the age of 12. He moved to America after serving in the French Air Force.
By 1964 he was able to open up his own workshop in New York.
