Richard Wagner in Scotland

Glasgow and Edinburgh are set to have a 'visit' from Richard Wagner.
Glasgow and Edinburgh are set to have a visit, in spirit at least, from Richard Wagner, according to the BBC.

Music lovers from elsewhere in the UK will also be able to enjoy the composer's presence in the cities - which is set to take the form of three performances - via Radio 3.

Tristan and Isolde will be performed in the Scottish locations starting this September until the following April.

Music instrument experts the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra will be involved with the concerts.

Famous singers will also be making an appearance, including Ian Storey and Nina Stemme. A tenor and soprano respectively, both have previously taken part in the opera.

"I have been genuinely impatient for many years to bring this Tristan project to Scotland," said the Symphony Orchestra's conductor, Donald Runnicles.

"These concerts bring the orchestra and I back to the roots of our relationship together, in 2001, in concert performances of opera."

Of the singers involved – who also include Peter Rose and Robert Dean Smith – he added: "I'm delighted they are coming to Scotland to take part in our epic Wagnerian journey."

Next year, 2013, marks 200 years since Wagner was born. He lived between 1813 and 1833.
