Legendary rock photographer Jim Marshall has died.

The 74-year-old American passed away in his sleep aged 74 last night (23.03.10), just a day before he was due to take part in an event at New York's Morrison Hotel Gallery, which will now show a memorial of his work instead.

The photographer was best known for his iconic pictures of music legends, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and The Who, with one of his most famous works being an image of Jimi Hendrix burning his guitar at the Monterey Pop Festival.

Despite his advancing years, Jim - who contributed artwork to over 500 albums - was still working up until his death, and even released a book last year, 'Trust'.

He once said: "I have no kids, my photographs are my children."

Jim - who was born in Chicago - was raised in San Francisco and started taking photographs of local musicians while still at school.

His big break came when he gave jazz legend John Coltrane a lift, with the musician returning the favour by letting Jim take pictures of him.

Hi most recent work included portraits of Ben Harper, Lenny Kravitz and John Mayer.
