Rock star's Gibson les Paul sells for £17,000 at auction
A Gibson les Paul electric guitar used by a UK based rock star that was put up for auction to raise money for victims of the Japanese earthquake has sold for more than three times its original guide price.
The electric guitar, which has been used by The Wildhearts frontman Ginger on every one of their albums, eventually sold for £17,000. It was initially priced at £5,000, reported the Bearsden Herald.
Poignantly it was bought by a Japanese fan from the port of Sendai, where hundreds died following the earthquake and tsunami.
Speaking to the newspaper, Ginger, who is originally from the north-east of England, said that he was "beyond happy" and that he was proud to feel "this connected" to this fans.
He said: "The money from the guitar will mean more to some than the memories mean to me. Often we have to give things away to get things in life, and in this case I'll be receiving the gift of helping someone less fortunate than myself."
The Wildhearts have been together for nearly two decades. In 2006, Kerrang! listed their debut album Earth Vs at number 20 in its best rock albums of all time chart.
